Clinical ResearchDescription of Clinical Research ProgramNew Mexico Clinical Research & Osteoporosis Center, Inc. is strongly committed to clinical research with special emphasis on osteoporosis studies. We have 16 years of experience with a proven track record of excellence in our field. In addition to osteoporosis studies, we have completed studies in diverse areas of interest, including hypertension, asthma, COPD, lipid disorders, hypertension, heartburn, GERD, dyspepsia, peptic ulcer disease, irritable bowel syndrome, osteoarthritis, obesity, migraine headache, and diabetes. Our full-service facility, which is adjacent to two major hospitals, has certified study coordinators, a large patient database, on-site radiology, two DXA machines, and extensive support services. We have a very active osteoporosis program, with strong involvement in our community that includes bone density testing, consultation, education, and research. Our busy osteoporosis center does bone density testing for our own patients and accepts referrals from throughout New Mexico. Demographic data and bone density results are kept on a large electronic database. We frequently consult for other healthcare providers on difficult osteoporosis management problems. Our osteoporosis educational activities include publication of Mike's Manual, a clinical guide to the management of osteoporosis and a reference of codes and criteria for bone density referrals for New Mexico health plans; the Santa Fe Bone Symposium, an annual meeting developed in cooperation with the International Society of Bone Densitometry; quarterly CME presentations for the New Mexico Osteoporosis Society, with a faculty of experts drawn from throughout the US; establishment of the annual "Stroll & Roll" for Osteoporosis and Arthritis, a major event with widespread community support; Osteoporosis Foundation of New Mexico Albuquerque Support Group; monthly educational seminars for local healthcare providers; and frequent lectures for physicians, nurses, and the public. We have been involved with clinical trials of antiresorptive drugs and anabolic agents for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis. We have studied Kyphoplasty(tm), a minimally invasive treatment for acute vertebral fractures. We perform DXA studies with a Lunar Prodigy and a Hologic Delphi W, and measure patient height with a Seca Heightronic(tm) stadiometer. We do peripheral ultrasound bone density testing with a Lunar Achilles EXPRESS and a Hologic Sahara. Our physicians and technologist are certified in bone densitometry by the International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD). Both physicians are Clinical Assistant Professors of Medicine at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. Dr. Lewiecki is ISCD President and a faculty member for the ISCD certification course. Our site is conveniently located, with a direct 5-minute drive from the Albuquerque International Airport, and many nearby hotels and restaurants. We have a large and comfortable space for study monitors to work. BACK TO TOPE. Michael Lewiecki, MD This page update 01/10/08 |
